There is also Monarda (Monarda fistulosa or M. didyma) also called bergamot mint which is native to the Americas and used as a tea substitute called oswego tea. It was used as tea after the English tea was thrown over board at the Boston Tea Party. We will not refer to this oil as Bergamot but Orange, Bergamot so that confusion will be eliminated. Orange bergamot in scientific studies has shown the inhibition of the herpes simples I virus which causes cold sores. Blend with tea tree and lavender for treatment of cold sores, chicken pox, and shingles. Bergamot was used in Europe as a tanning agent until it was discovered that it was a skin carcinogenic. Cardamom - essential oil used in Vanilla Chai

INDIGENOUS COUNTRY: Tropical Asia

COUNTRY OF PRODUCTION: India, Guatemala, Sri Lanka

HISTORY INFORMATION: It has been used for over 3,000 years in Chinese and Indian medicine for urinary problems, reducing body fat, intestinal problems, pulmonary diseases and fevers. First brought to the West by Alexander the Great's soldiers. In Arab countries, Turkish coffee is a mixture of roasted coffee beans and roasted green cardamon. It is the cardomon that gives the coffee its distinct scent. Used throughout the world as a cooking herb, especially in curry and spice mixtures.

GENERAL INFORMATION: There are several related species used locally and medicinally. Siam Cardamom (Amomum cardomomum) is found in China and India. Wild Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) is also found there. Can be found in some carminative, stomachic and laxative preparations, also as a pharmaceutical flavoring. Extensively used as a fragrance component in soaps, cosmetics and perfumes. Approximately 80% of the world's supply of cardamon is produced in India. The fruits or seeds yield approximately 4-7% oil. Considered to be very much like ginger, although it is less irritating. It is said that it neutralizes the lingering odor of garlic. There is green and bleached or pale yellow cardamon, with the green having the most essential oil. The green type has a higher percentage of cineole.

DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: A perennial, reed-like herb up to 10 feet high with long, silky, blade-shaped leaves. Its long sheathing stems bear small, usually yellow, flowers with purple tips, followed by ovoid fruit. The fruit is about half an inch long, turning gray when ripe and producing two rows of red-brown seeds numbering eighteen in all.

Used to warm, improve circulation and digestion, soothe the intestines, relieve flatulence, uplift moods, energize, improve mental clarity and physical strength, increase sexual strength, relieve pain.

MENTAL USES: I am strong and healthy. I have all the time I need to heal and recover. My world allows me a safe and protected place to be.

EMOTIONAL USES: Feeling fragile, overly sensitive, healing, in need of protection and support TO strong and safe (probably recovering from illness, emotional trauma, or mental strain), in harmony with self and others.

SPIRITUAL USES: Can indicate that you are very vulnerable right now. You may be healing from an illness, transitional changes, or other profound changes. You are especially vulnerable to other people's energy and need special protection. It is like a baby needing the womb to grow in and be safe and protected; you are also needing a womb or a safe environment. The cardamon will create this environment in your energy field. It is also helpful to visualize a protective energy shield around you as you heal or go through life. Know that right now you need to take care of yourself and not expect too much, as much of your energy is being turned internally.

Cedar - essential oil used in Shadow Moss

INDIGENOUS COUNTRY: Texas

COUNTRY OF PRODUCTION: USA

HISTORY INFORMATION: This oil is usually rectified or fractionated, as it tends to crystallize and become solid. Can find no Native American medicinal sources. It was probably used like red cedar. Used in cleansers and cosmetics today.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Botanically related to East African cedarwood (Juniperus procera) which is used in making pencils. Chemically related to Red Cedarwood (J. virginiana) as they have the same components but are proportioned differently. Rectified oil is what you will most often find on the market, but some authorities say the whole oil is safer, yet impossible to find. We visited a refinery of Texas Cedarwood and found that all their product was sent to Europe and we were unable to get it locally. From what we were told, it seems that the US was getting their cedar oil for commercial applications from China, as it was cheaper.

DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: A large shrub or small tree growing to 20 feet, and it is usually multi-trunked producing dark blue fruit.

COLOR RANGE: Clear.

YIN\YANG: Yang

PHYSICAL ACTIONS AND USES: Antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, diuretic, expectorant, sedative for the nervous system, decongestant for circulatory systems and stimulant. Used for acne, dandruff, oily skin, psoriasis, dermatitis, scabies, insect repellent, bronchitis, cough, chronic congestion, sinusitis. Used to clear excess mucous, relieve discomfort from arthritis, rheumatism, and hemorrhoids, and used to relieve stress and tension, therefore an aid for meditation

MENTAL USES: I control no one and no one controls me. My will is Thy Will. I am protected and safe. I have help when I need it. I live and let live.

EMOTIONAL USES: Powerless, lifeless, feeling preyed upon, feeling watched, fatigued TO feeling in control, empowered, happy, productive, independent, energized.

SPIRITUAL USES: Can indicate that damage has occurred to the energy field, especially from abuse of power. This is a major issue because we all have either abused power in some way or been abused by someone in power. When it comes to having free will, control issues seem to occur naturally. Who decides? Most of us find it easy to let others decide for us; let them be responsible for what happens. I did as I was told. I did my job. I am off the hook. It is scary for us to take a stand or be responsible. Then who will we blame? Perhaps we have decided to take control, knowing full well if something goes wrong, we know who we will scapegoat. As we have allowed others to control us or we have tried to control others, a degree of damage can be created in our auric field. Control eventually leads to self destruction. Free will and self-determination leads to growth and expansion. Texas Cedarwood heals the damage and ejects negative energy, especially of a vampire quality, from the energy field. Be sure to set up a sacred space before beginning.

To add to the confusion, Champaca Wood or Guaiacwood (Bulnesia sarmiento) can also be called Champaca, and there is a Champaca Wood or leaf oil made from M. champaca. Also, the flowers can be white or yellow. We are not sure if the color of the flower makes a difference, but we have heard that the yellow flowering Champaca is like Jasmine. This oil can often be adulterated with Ylang Ylang. Our chemist says that this oil looks like a distilled mixture of true champaca, M. longifolia and ylang ylang. Some references also say that this oil does not exist at all. M. longifolia is said to have white flowers and the scent of basil. It can be added to the Champaca distilling process. Gunther says that this is oil is impossible to distill as it is destroyed in the distillation process. Lime/Mexican Lime - essential oil used in Now And Later

INDIGENOUS COUNTRY: Tropical Asia

COUNTRY OF PRODUCTION: Mexico, Italy

HISTORY INFORMATION: Introduced to Europe by the Moors and brought to the Americas by explorers around the 16th century. Lime is a good source of vitamin C. It was used by sailors and explorers to stay healthy and especially to prevent scurvy (which is why sailors were called limeys).

GENERAL INFORMATION: There are many cultivars of citrus and limes are no exception. The lime cited here is the Bitter Lime and it is often confused with the Sweet Lime (C. limetta) or Italian Lime which produces an oil called "limette". Combava is an essential oil produced from the leech lime (C. hystrix). Persian Lime (C. latifola var. persian) is much like the bitter lime in species. Citrus peel is cold pressed while the juice or whole fruit is distilled to produce citric acid. The oil can also be "folded", meaning terpenes have been removed to increase aroma (often used in limon-lime drinks). The expressed oil has coumarins, making it phototoxic, while the distilled does not. Some therapists consider the rectified or distilled oil to be better, as the coumarins that produce phototoxicity are removed. There is also some confusion between lime oil and an oil called lime blossoms (Tilia europea), which is actually made from linden tree blooms and is not a citrus at all.

DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: An evergreen tree growing up to 15 feet high, with stiff sharp spines and smooth ovate leaves bearing small fragrant flowers which produce small green fruits.

The American tangerine does seem to be a different than the European. We are dealing with a population of trees that are easily cultivated creating a variety of cultivars. The growing environment seems to make a difference in the chemical composition. I have found it helpful to look at country of origin and think of tangerine and mandarin to be the same while it is the location that makes the difference. Also satsuma, Japanese tangerine or mandarin, is also the same.. It is often adulterated with orange oil and the oil will show very high limomene % if this is the case.
